Role Title: Youth Special Educator - Leaders in Training Program

Reporting to: Youth Coordinator

Native Montreal is a non-profit, multi-service, community-based Indigenous organization encompassing cultural and psychosocial intervention programs dedicated to Indigenous peoples of various age groups. We are proud members of the Friendship Center movement.

The Leaders in Training program, designed for Indigenous teens who have outgrown children's activities, offers a summer of personal growth and skill development.

The Youth Special Educator, along with Animation staff, will offer daily mentorship to participants. The aim is to develop them into future community contributors and knowledge keepers. Youth will engage in scheduled programs developed by the Youth Program Coordinator in partnership with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers.Through this program, Native Montreal aims to foster the next generation of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis leaders in the greater Montreal area, promoting both personal, employability and community development.

Summary of responsibilities:
Reporting to the Youth Coordinator, the Youth Educator is a support person responsible for the well-being, safety, and program execution for youth participants, including staff support, intervention tactics, and role-modeling.

Main functions:

  • Compulsory participation and leading in staff training activities

  • Supervise and provide guidance to Youth Animator

  • Participate in the planning and animate the daily activities of the program

  • Provide one-on-one or small-group support to participants with additional needs, including those with behavioral or emotional challenges.

  • Develop and implement individualized strategies to help youth regulate emotions, engage in activities, and interact positively with peers.

  • Offer guidance and training to staff on effective techniques for managing difficult behaviors and promoting positive participant interactions.

  • Communicate regularly with the Youth Coordinator regarding youth progress, concerns, and recommended interventions.

  • Ensure respect and achievement of thematic planning

  • Communicate regularly with the coordinator

  • Have good relations with participants’ parents

  • Create an atmosphere of harmony and respect

  • Ensure the well-being health and safety of participants at all times

  • Supervise the administration of first aid during incidents and complete the report to that effect

  • Ensure respect for the different policies and procedures of the program

Personal qualities :
Leadership, dynamism, creativity, versatility, resourcefulness, sense of responsibility, stress tolerance

Requirements:

  • 2 years of studies related to special education, psychology, social work, or a related field (or equivalent experience working with teenagers).

  • 2 years of experience working with teenagers (specifically dealing with behavioural challenges is an asset)

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values.

  • Strong skills in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and positive reinforcement strategies.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic environment and take initiative.

  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before the start date).

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Work conditions :

  • Seasonal contract from June 2nd to August 22nd, 2025

  • 35-40 hours / week for 9 weeks, including training.

  • The starting salary ranges from $19.30 to $29.19 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.

  • Work Locations: Native Montreal, Angrignon Park, various predetermined locations throughout the city

  • Working hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday
