Role Title: Special Educator

Reporting to: Day Camp Coordinator and Director of Intervention

Native Montreal is a non-profit, multi-service, community-based Indigenous organization encompassing cultural and psychosocial intervention programs dedicated to Indigenous peoples of various age groups. We are proud members of the Friendship Center movement. 

IORAHKOTE Camp is a day camp for Indigenous children. With the learning of Indigenous culture as a backdrop, we want children to develop a taste for healthy lifestyles and have the opportunity to experience both physical and social successes in building a healthy self-confidence. 

Job Description 

The Special Educator is to support campers with behavioral, emotional, or learning challenges. The Special Educator will work closely with camp staff and the Intervention department to develop and implement strategies that ensure all children feel included, supported, and able to participate fully in camp activities.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide one-on-one or small-group support to campers with additional needs, including those with behavioral challenges.

  • Develop and implement individualized strategies to help campers regulate emotions, engage in activities, and interact positively with peers.

  • Offer coaching and support to staff on effective techniques for managing difficult behaviors and fostering positive camper interactions.

  • Modify activities as needed to accommodate the diverse needs and abilities of campers.

  • Communicate regularly with the Camp Coordinator regarding camper progress, concerns, and recommended interventions.

  • Communicate with parents/guardians as needed and report any concerns to the Camp Coordinator and Intervention Director.

  • Participate in team meetings.

  • Follow all camp policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.

  • Perform, on request, all other tasks related to this function.

  • Patience, strong communication skills, problem-solving and adaptability, de-escalation skills, cultural 

  • Sensitivity,  teamwork, and collaboration. 

Requirements: 

  • Background in special education, psychology, social work, or a related field (or equivalent experience working with children with special needs).

  • Experience working with children who have behavioral challenges, neurodivergence, or special needs.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values.

  • Strong skills in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and positive reinforcement strategies.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic environment and take initiative.

  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before the start date).

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.


Work conditions: 

  • Job Type: Full-time, Seasonal (Summer)

  • Duration: From June 23 to August 15, 2025

  • Hours: 35-40 hours/week 

  • Working hours: 8:30am to 4:30pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm. 

  • Work Environment: This is an outdoor-based position. Candidates must be comfortable working outside in various weather conditions and actively participating in outdoor activities and camp outings throughout the day.


Salary:  The starting salary ranges from $19.30 to $29.19 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.

Work Locations: Angrignon Park, Arthur-Therrien Park, various predetermined locations throughout the city.
